- Note: This article refers to all of the Schlond Poofas seen in the show rather than any specific Schlond Poofa due to its various inclusions in episodes - it is unlikely that the Schlond Poofa shown in Licensed to Drive is the same one as the one seen in The Reunion Show or A Smidge of Midge
The Schlond Poofa is a recurring "character" and acts as a "Where's Waldo?"-esque gag in a number of episodes. It first appeared as a repeated throwaway gag in Licensed to Drive, however after the webseries gained popularity outside its target audience the Schlond Poofa was inserted into newer episodes as a shoutout to older fans.
History[]
The Schlond Poofa was introduced in Licensed to Drive and acted as a repeated gag throughout the episode. Following the show's sudden boom in popularity on social media sites, it inexplicably became an extremely popular meme to older fans of the web series. The peak of its popularity on Tumblr resulted in what has come to be known as "The Night of the Schlond Poofas" on barbie-lifeinthedreamhouse's blog. Over 100 messages were submitted (mostly anonymously), the majority of them including a popular piece of pop culture, for example a book title or a song lyric, with one word changed to "Schlond Poofa". Examples include "And in that moment, I swear we were Schlond Poofa" and "My Schlond Poofa brings all the Kens to the yard". The complete set of messages can be viewed here.
Following this, the Schlond Poofa's popularity among fans skyrocketed and songs, fanfiction and fanart were quickly produced.
Prior to season 2 commencing, fans began to speculate whether or not the Schlond Poofa would return given its popularity. It has been referenced in many episodes since then. Staff working on the show, including storyboarders and animators, have reacted positively to its status.
In August of 2012, Mattel officially filed to trademark the term "Schlond Poofa". Among its listed goods and services include toys, clothing, printed matter and housewares, although it has yet to appear in any way shape or form outside of the show. The official Barbie tumblr made a post following Ooh How Campy, Too, referencing the fact that there was a hidden Schlond Poofa in the episode.
Appearances in Episodes[]
Episode | Use |
---|---|
Happy Birthday Chelsea | Appears in the background of the room Ken uses to assemble the bicycle |
Licensed to Drive | First appears by Ken when he is assembling Barbie's dream car. It appears again later when it falls of the car when Barbie is learning to drive. Ken picks it up and chases after the car with the Schlond Poofa in hand. It appears one last time as it flies onto the screen as the car crashes off-screen. |
The Reunion Show | After the Paris backdrop falls over, a Schlond Poofa can be seen when Stacie ducks. |
Closet Clothes Out | It appears on Ken's bedspread during a flashback. |
A Smidge of Midge | It appears on Barbie's revolving counter when Midge flips through it, and she looks at it in confusion before it is flipped away. |
Ooh How Campy, Too | It is seen when Stacie throws some objects out of her bag while looking for the schnoggin wrench. It is only visible for a few frames. |
Let's Make A Doll | Raquelle deliberately blurts out "Schlond Poofa" when trying to guess an answer to a question. The question is unknown, however the other answers she says are "Me" and "Raquelle", so some fans speculate the question was "Who is the love of Ken's life?" It also is later seen in the Barbie-pedia at the end of the episode as a render made by the Dreamhouser blog thekyan. |
The Ken Den | When Barbie first walks into the Ken den, Schlond Poofa decorations can be seen on the wall to the right of the television. |
Primp My Ride | One of the Schlond Poofa's most prominent roles to date. When Barbie looks for the perfect gift to give Ken for their anniversary, she decides to make over his car upon seeing something in a magazine Chelsea proclaims that "Ken will love". Later, she is seen opening a case implied to contain the same item seen in the magazine. It is later revealed that it is a one of a kind Golden Schlond Poofa. Ken is estatic about the gift until he attempts to drive his decked-out car and it falls off, upon which Ken proclaims "That darn Golden Schlond Poofa!", referencing the first episode it appeared in. Also, a Schlond Poofa decoration can be seen behind Ken on the back wall of his garage when he squeals. |
Going to the Dogs | Raquelle says "Schlond Poofa" while trying to communicate with her dog Brunhilde, who she claims can only understand German. Other phrases she says are "wiener schnitzel" and "danke schön". |
Dream A Little Dreamhouse | When Ken is drilling in a piece for Chelsea's playhouse, various pieces fly everywhere, including a Schlond Poofa landing on the grass. |
The Amaze Chase | A special Platinum Schlond Poofa, which when activated released a bunch of fireworks saying "I ♥ (Barbie symbol)". |
Don't Bet On It | A Schlond Poofa is shown in the hands of one of Chelsea's bears in her bedroom. |
Alone In the Dreamhouse | One is seen on the cabinet behind Chelsea when she's playing poker. |
Send in the Clones - Part 1 | A blue one is seen in the Reporter's news report of the clones wreaking havoc when one is shown directing traffic. |
Sister's Fun Day | A drawing of a Schlond Poofa is shown on the physicist's diagrams for trying to figure out how to clear Barbie's schedule for one day. |
The Fantasticest Journey | A Schlond Poofa is seen in Taffy's stomach as Barbie and Ken are flying the airplane. |

Trivia[]
There was a golden schlond poofa in Primp My Ride.
The Schlond Poofa was originally going to be called the Schalldämpfer, the German word for "muffler," implying that the assembly instructions Ken reads in "Licensed to Drive" are in German. The name was changed to a similar-sounding nonsensical word when the producers learned that "Schalldämpfer" also translates to "gun silencer."
